A survey among teenagers aged 14 to 19 found that, while a career in retail was far from the most popular choice, it was also far from the least.
The Skillsmart Retail research showed retail was the 10th most popular of 17 career choices. Despite the mediocre score, 70% of those working in the sector said they enjoyed it.
The survey questioned 723 young people - 38% of whom are already working in the sector.
Reasons for enjoying retail work included "social factors such as working with colleagues and customers as well as salary and other benefits such as staff discounts and flexible hours".
