Wal-Mart reportedly "blew the whistle" on alleged price-fixing of food and toiletries recently, thus giving it immunity from any fines that may be forthcoming.
The Sunday Telegraph reported that Wal-Mart/Asda told the OFT about activity between UK retailers and fmcg companies. Any company found guilty of price-fixing could be fined up to 10% of its annual sales.
OFT officials and lawyers raided the head offices of the major multiples over the allegations, which also involve firms such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Reckitt Benckiser. It is believed that it will be at least two years before the OFT publishes any findings.
