Retailers have rebuffed MPs comments about food waste in the UK, following a government study that found the average household throws away £8 a week.
Brown said "unnecessary" purchases of food were contributing to rises in food prices, hinting promotions such as bogofs were a cause. Lib Dem environment minister Steve Webb said: "The problem of food waste has been made worse by the government's failure to get tough with supermarkets".
Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy was quoted in the media saying Brown's initiative was "well-meaning but wrong-headed," and Sainsbury's boss Justin King also rejected any criticisms.
