Yeah! to David Cameron telling roly poly Brits to get a grip, stop blaming everyone else and to eat less. For once a politician has jumped down off the fence and said something sensible.
I'm getting sick and tired of nanny politics and overly PC nonsense that leaves no room for telling certain people in society to sort themselves out. It's totally ridiculous that the food industry is tying itself in knots over the Food Standard Agency's Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM) when people simply need to eat less and move more.
The FSA is adamant that it won't change the 100g measure to which the NPM model applies - meaning that dozens of healthy foods usually eaten in small portions - raisins, Marmite - are classed as unhealthy. 'Scuse me while I eat half my Marmite straight from its jar with a spoon.
Talking of nanny politics - thanks so much Mr Brown for telling me to stop wasting so much food. Now you've pointed out the waste to me I see the error of my ways and realise how much richer I could be. Silly man. People don't waste food on purpose. They waste it because their plans change during the week, because it goes off - even when it's still within its use-by date, or they waste it because actually in the end they didn't fancy it and it was too late to put it in the freezer.
As for the proposal to putting use-by dates on to on-line shopping sites so us on-line shoppers can better plans our shopping, words fail me. I shop on line because it's convenient - I make a few clicks while watching Sex & the City and the next day my food arrives. As if I'm going to forego Carrie & Big to study use-by dates!
Now - if they really want to make it convenient here's how. I tell Tesco/Ocado I need to feed two adults and two children for five days. I need breakfast and dinner for all five days plus some lunchbox stuff for the kids for three of those days. I also need two bottles of wine. I give them a list of anything that's definitely a no-no and tell them my budget. The store delivers within £10 of my budget, complete with recipe suggestions for each day of the week to tie in with the ingredients they've chosen for me. Of course household stuff like cleaning materials would be shopped normally as would biscuits, confectionary and other snacks.
I know. It could never work and what I really need is a butler. But I can wish!
