How much work do you do out of hours?
Retail is now 24/7 so I'm not really sure how you define 'normal hours'. Somerfield is going through a period of significant change and it is a really exciting environment to work in, however there never seems to be enough hours in the day.
Competition or working in partnership?
I have always believed there is no harm in a little friendly competition but the only way to really add value is through a partnership approach. We have worked very hard over the past 12 months to encourage our head office-based functions to spend more time in our stores through an 'adopter' programme. The retail HR teams work to a business partner model to ensure we really understand our customers' needs.
What's your favourite thing about retail?
The fast pace and the challenge of trying to exceed customers' expectations.
What gave you satisfaction this week?
We have just launched a new talent management process. The feedback has been very positive and, while very simplistic, it will support the identification and development of our future leaders in the business.
Does life begin at 40 or is middle age now just further away?
I turn 40 this year so I hope so. At the end of the day I think age is a state of mind although the signs of age are beginning to show! I don't feel any different to when I was 25 but I think I will have to retire from nightclubs soon.
Do you still dance or do you nurse your drink?
I have to admit I am quite partial to a bit of a boogie on an occasional basis.
Has the number of customer complaints about the price of goods increased recently?
